Social Media Marketing FAQ

+What is Social Media Marketing?

In order to define Social Media Marketing, one must first know what Social Media is. Social Media involves a genuine conversation between people about something of mutual interest – based on the thoughts, experiences, and opinions of the participants. This CONVERSATION commonly takes place on one or a series of web sites such as Facebook, Yelp, YouTube and Twitter, just to name a few.

Social Media Marketing is the act of utilizing these social web sites to take part in, and ultimately drive those conversations that pertain to your product, service, company, and industry, while using these same tools to build a brand or business over the internet.

+What is the difference between advertising online, and Social Media Marketing?

Online advertising, such as through Google AdWords or Facebook Ads, may be a part of your overall Social Media Marketing Plan, but the two are not the same. Advertising is just that – the purchase of advertisements to be placed on a website or series of websites. A solid plan for Social Media Marketing will incorporate some advertising, but will also instruct and direct a small business as to how to use social websites to take part in “the conversation”, and provide customer service, advice, feedback, and eventually become established as an expert in the field.

+Why does my small business need a Social Media Marketing plan?

The internet is where most people go to get information before making a purchase. In fact, over 70% of all purchases made, somehow initiated on the internet – whether it was checking a website, reading a review, or following an ad. Social Media plays a very large role in the research for a product or service. Millions of reviews are written on sites such as Yelp, Facebook, Google, iTunes, Amazon, TripAdvisor, and many other websites – and people tend to believe and put trust in such reviews.

Your small business can take advantage of social media by being a driving force in the conversation about your product or service, and establishing yourself (or your business) as an expert in your field or industry.
